I “discovered” HOW and NOSM via a friend of mine and inspiration for street art photography, New York City’s incredible, Luna Park. Back in 2010, we were doing a photo walk around Williamsburg in Brooklyn and she took me to see a piece they did on the Rock Star Bar and my mind was blown. They covered the entire building in their hyper-detailed mural style and I could have spent hours looking but we had places to go and other things to photograph. Still, that name stuck in my head, ‘How & Nosm’. I knew those two did killer work! Luna told me they were twin brothers, which I found fascinating since Os Gemeos are the same… twin brothers working in large-scale fantasy street art murals around the world. Crazy. Anyhow, I watched their work on Flickr for the next year or so until I heard they were doing a mural here in Philly on one of the buildings Tony Goldman owned in the Gayborhood. Result! Kenny Scharf had just done his wall nearby so this was exciting and they did not disappoint. Some people complain that you cannot see the entire work from the street level and while this is a valid complaint, I rather enjoy the mystery of not seeing and not knowing what’s up there. Their work is so far out and engages my mind so much that not seeing that part of it just makes me think and wonder that much more. I walk by and see this piece a few times a week going to and from work so it is a constant part of the urban fabric in this area of the city. Baltimore’s GAIA did another mural on another Tony Goldmman owned property adjacent to the How & Nosm piece so this area has a great density of large-scale street art. Perfect! Recently I ventured to NYC to see their 2012 walls, one in Williamsburg and the other in The Bowry on the rotating wall on Bowry & Houston. It was below freezing and very windy but I still lingered and stared for a while. (Then I had to go to Tom and Jerry’s bar for whisky before catching a train!!!)
