“So really, the person you think you want to date is not the person you want to date at all. They’re just really bad French fries.”
-Gordon Holden
Words & Photographs by Gordon Holden
Gordon Holden is a conceptual artist and photographer. His work captures visual and tactile expression through the backwards mitch mash of an osmosis of past and present pop culture.

“The bounds of identity and context, familiarity and apparent security, shield us not only from our vast potentiality, but also from pain and adversity, dissatisfaction and mediocrity.”

Poem by Gus Laessig – Original Artwork by Ann Ernández for Paradigm Magazine
Grandpa
Grandpa was a nice man,
just nice.
With circles of kids
at his chair
he’d strum and sing
and we’d smile and dance.
We met like this
a few times a year,
fat off turkey or ham.
The circles grew
and the circles grew circles
until grandpa couldn’t
sing anymore.
His guitar’s belly
was empty now,
starving for attention
that nobody dared feed.
My Easter suit came out
in September that year.
Pants soiled from kneeling
instead of the usual egg hunts.
My heat ...

Poem by Gus Laessig – Original Artwork by Ann Ernandez for Paradigm Magazine
Today, my knee hurts forever
My knee’s been sore
for a week or so,
it aches me today
and my walk has slowed.
I’m twenty-five today,
and I’ve lived
a third of my life.
I take it like gray hair
and wrinkles.
My knee tells me
that I’ve lived.
I slid through school,
tapped backboards,
and kicked asphalt.
I ran from troubles
and I chased girls.
My knee hurts badly today.
I’m limping and it’s
just getting worse.
It hurts because
my first two ...

Introduction to ‘Rear Window’ by Theo Constantinou & Cosmo Baker Introduction by April Lanier
Rear Window is a visual project I developed for Paradigm Magazine, which is a 21st century documentary style play on Alfred Hitchcock‘s famous 1954 film, starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, without the suspense and murder. 10 years ago, there was a Skateboard video magazine called 411VM. In each video ...

Tip Of My Tongue
“People take photos for many reasons…ego, money, expression. I do it because I have to. If I don’t create, I am horrible.”
-Sunny Suits
I almost want to turn away. This is how it feels the first time; cheeks hot, an embarrassed flush, an apology on the tip of my tongue Looking upon moments so incredibly intimate it feels as if I am painted by shadows, peeking through the blinds into the apartment across the way, watching ...

“It’s the same way with the mythology. We like to read about mythologies, we were raised around religious mythologies, and once we read about Joseph Campbell’s monomyth – this idea that all stories have a similar form – we wanted to apply that idea to music and art.”

Animal Dance
I am anything but a figure painter, as any figure painter will tell you. My approach to representing bodies, creatures or characters is purely a method to free myself; to truly paint abstractly with meaning. Abstract painting has always been my favorite, ever since I was too young to pick up a brush, and I’ve never had much use for representational painting especially pre-modern. The act of bullying paint into looking like ...
